Nov. 7th, 2010 10:13 amI think I'm going to give up and post my SPN 6x06 reaction with my 6x07. . . . when I'll finally have time to watch the episode. Which might be a while from now. I'm so jealous of everyone who's already seen it-my friendlist is FULL of *reactions* and *feelings* and I'm trying very hard not to spoil myself.

The next time I try knitting two socks at the same time on circulars, I will be EXTREMELY sure of the number of stitches I'd like before I finish casting on. Squinting and thinking 'maybe five or six more' doesn't really work with this method . . .
still have no free time. Attempting to catch up on reading/watching while knitting. Will be out of town this weekend. If you're expecting anything from me, I'm probably not avoiding you, I'm just kind of overwhelmed at the moment.

Oct. 19th, 2010 09:50 pmGuys? Can I talk to you about my bra? Because it's a pretty awesome bra.
( cut for those who don't actually want to hear about my bra. )
It's also finally decided to be really nice running weather outside-it's chilly enough that it feels nice to warm up while exercising, but there's no ice on the ground. Now if only I had more daylight hours. . .
( Mad Men 4x12 'Blowing Smoke' (NO I HAVEN'T SEEN THE FINALE YET) )
ETA: OMG WHAT AWESOME YES NOW!
Also, someone figured out the floor plan for Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.

Oct. 17th, 2010 04:56 pmThis weekend's been so busy, there was no time for roller derby. That's how crazy busy it's been. I've got a stack of new awesome comics that I've barely looked at (Fallcon was yesterday), and have no idea when I'll have time to watch the Mad Men series finale. But I managed not to go into work today!
So quickly, before heading out the door again:
*Supernatural made me laugh out loud and love Bobby again. Also enjoyed the Fargo reference.
*I still have problems with Morgana's characterization in regards to her treatment of Gwen, but that's nothing new. Still enjoyed this episode more than expected.
*Corin Tucker's new album is the methadone to my Sleater-Kinney heroin addition
*Repo, the Genetic Opera- I don't think I've ever seen a movie fail as hard with show, don't tell as this one. Something tried to happen on screen once, but then it went black. Surprise!Joan Jett was confusing.
*Plants vs. Zombies demo for Xbox-like the original, but in HD! Huh? What? Why?
*I approve of mustacheoed squid. Hirstute in history is something also near and dear to my heart. I've been linked here before, but I always forget about it when I actually have money, so. . .
*The atlantic is republishing old technology articles from various eras. Forgot to link this last week (don't ask me how long some of my 'currently open in other tabs' links have been left open, it's a little frightening).
*Why yes, I did need this in my life. Even if I'm going to end up violently disagreeing with some of the articles, I'm sure.
*There is a mystery animal that is eating up all of my tapestry needles.
*The three-step, five ingredient, less than one hour recipe for buckeyes is the most popular thing I've ever made for my coworkers. Go figure.
*And lastly, this is the best 'lost cat' poster ever:

Oct. 10th, 2010 09:26 pmFirst, the fandom related one: Cosmic Love, song by Florence and the Machine, vid by
affablyevil Awesome song, awesome clip selection, Cas-centric.
Random links on Chicago (it's been coming up a lot lately. Not just on the internet, but coworkers asking me for sightseeing ideas, friends asking me why I think Daley's stepping down, other friends asking me to explain white sox fans . . you get the idea)
I am Chicago is a series of street portraits grouped by neighborhood. Not all of the neighborhoods are covered (most of them seem to be on the north/west sides, but it's an interesting mix.
Vivian Maier was a street photographer in Chicago from the 1950's-1990's. Here's a selection of her pictures.
So this project was making the rounds a few weeks ago, based on this image of segregation in Chicago by Bill Rankin. And while the racial segregation was interesting, I'm a lot more surprised at the income tab (on the Bill Rankin site, click on income). Sure, there's still large blocks of mostly-blue (and one large block of mostly-red on the north shore), but it's far more integrated by income than it is by race. I was saving this one for a while, trying to figure out what to do with it-but I'm not sure where to go.
The first link's nice too-a little less detail, but it's a nice way to compare the makeup of various American cities. Unsurprisingly, Minneapolis/St. Paul is pretty damn white, but still in need of a Native American tag.
Via Jewcy of all places, a New York Times article on Rahm's chances for becoming mayor. I personally think that he's not likely to win-the ties with the President are more likely to hurt than help him (liberals blame him for giving away too much to the Republicans, conservatives think he's a bully, and the people in the middle are largely machine voters). I'm still really excited to watch this. A real mayoral election! In Chicago! the last time something close to that happened, I was four.
Also on Jewcy: Schmekel is your friendly neighborhood transgender jewish polka-punk band. Look, if you're going to have a shtick, you better make it good. Here's a song called Pharaoh/Moses slash. Yes, it's what you think it is.
In other music related news, this makes me die a little inside. D: Oh, Moe. No. No, Moe, No!
And now for something completely different: How to degauss a cat.
If that's not enough, here's a dog that will do the dishes, the laundry, and start the coffee for you.
Other Youtube Videos You've Probably Already Seen, but Just In Case:
GROVER AS THE OLD SPICE GUY.
The It Gets Better Project. Just in case you've somehow missed this, it's been everywhere, but it's worth linking again.

Oct. 4th, 2010 09:24 pmREAL ENTRY SOON. UNTIL THEN, HAVE IRON MAN WITH THE ELECTRIC GUITAR ON TESLA COILS
. . .
boyfriend just informed me that I'm like, two months late with this shit. Whatever. I'm still posting.
( SHARKTOPUS )
( THE GRAVES )
Things I learned from these movies:
1. If you are in a horror film, remember to dress wisely. If you’re male you’ll get most of your survival powers from your six-pack-try to have your shirt open at all times. If you’re female, you’ll want some sensible ‘science’ gear. Cargo pants and a tank top are also acceptable-remember, you want to show off one, but not both, of your assets (T or A, not T&A). Wear a bikini at your own peril.
2. A stick is a much better weapon than a knife, crowbar, scythe, AK-47, or grenade launcher. If the stick fails, try a different stick. Or a set of aluminum knitting needles.
3. Government contracts can be negotiated poolside in Mexico-no signatures required. This might require the presence of a magic sombrero.
4. All civilians should be visibly drunk when meeting with high-ranking military officers.
5. SHARKTOPUS CAN CLIMB TREES. SCIENCE IS AWESOME.
6. There is nothing more important than the comic book convention. Go to the comic book convention.
7. If you want to kill someone, go for the leg. People can survive multiple head wounds and getting stabbed in the chest with few ill effects, but one jab to the leg will get anyone. Or just tackle them.
8. If you suspect that you’re being hunted down by an entire town of crazed cultists, GO TO THE NEXT TOWN FOR HELP. Don’t ask someone else from the same town!
9. 90% of the resort-goers in Puerto Vallarta are women aged 18-25. Unless sharktopus only attacked the young lesbian beaches.

Oct. 2nd, 2010 05:47 pmAccording to yesterday's poll, most of my flist would use massive quantities of butter for sex, science, and embezzlement. Sounds about right.
The write in answers were:
haruslex -- EXTRACT THE FAT AND TURN IT INTO EXPLOSIVES ALA FIGHT CLUB
jantalaimon -- Brando it. Duh! >3
zempasuchil -- The Soviet Bloc stole it.
When brainstorming ideas for answers to yesterday's poll, I ended up here. Every year, the Minnesota Dairy Industry holds a beauty contest called Princess Kay of the Milky Way-the winner gets to a) go around Minnesota and talk about their love of the dairy industry, and b)a life sized butter sculpture bust of themselves, which is displayed at the state fair.
Just in case you were wondering, the results are REALLY CREEPY. Also, they all look the same, since they're beauty contestants. Here's an example.
So of course, after a while, you have to wonder-what the hell do you do with a 90 pound block of butter version of you?
The answers, for those of you too lazy to click on the link, are:
1) Christmas baking
2) Large cookouts, where people fight over your nose
3) Displayed at their wedding. ( I DON'T KNOW WHY? WHAT?)
4) They just, you know, keep it in their freezer. For posterity. And to freak out poor unsuspecting houseguests.
Nobody admitted any sort of Picture of Dorian Gray-style hijinks, but nobody's done an in-depth investigation, either.
Speaking of weird-ass Americana-Supernatural!

( Merlin (Spoilers for eps 3 and 4) )

In which I am happy and flaily.
Sep. 20th, 2010 10:26 pmThe end of this week is shaping up to be awesome. LET ME TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT.
THURSDAY: Janelle Monae AND Of Montreal at First Ave! AT THE SAME TIME! (well, almost-Janelle Monae opens) I do a flaily muppet dance just thinking of it. It kind of makes it hard to type.
FRIDAY: Premiere of Supernatural! Gore! Mayhem! Angst! Sam's abs! YED! It'll be awesome.
SATURDAY: SHARKTOPUS PREMIERES. I'm kind of more excited about this than Supernatural premiere, not gonna lie. IT'S A SHARK. AND AN OCTOPUS. TOGETHER
~*GENIUS*~
. . . only, I'm going out on Saturday night to see real-live things, so I'll probably be babbling about it on Sunday some point. Just as a warning.
I think I'm going to end up taking my usual approach to new shows: waiting until I see what everyone else is babbling about in November, and then joining the party late. Yes, I'm the reason why your favorite obscure show got cancelled (except for Middleman. I fucking loved the Middleman).
The most productive thing I did today:
1. Take some finger puppets.
2. Take four of the 15,000 hair elastics you have lying around the house (or I guess you can pick some up at walgreens. or take some of mine-I think they're breeding).
3. Use way too much krazy glue.
MIX
4. Profit! (or at least, never having to worry about your knitting falling off your DPNs again. Somebody else already does this on etsy for profit.)
( Gorrillas and Zombies after the cut: )
One more thing: There's a new Supernatural Crossover Commentfic Community-
twisted_yarns. No, it has nothing to do with knitting. Though you're welcome to do a SPN/knitting prompt. Join! Leave prompts for people! Get other people to join! answer my prompt!

Sep. 19th, 2010 10:30 pmCurrently Knitting: Butterfly Mittens. I figured what I wanted to do with the pattern-I even did a gauge swatch up for a number of different options! But while doing the gauge swatch, I kind of. . . forgot to check my gauge. Starting over with 40 stitches instead of 44. . .
Currently Reading: Still working on Perdido Street Station. I’m starting to realize that reading long passages on fake esoteric philosophy of science theories might require more concentration than I have when I’m on the elliptical. Perhaps I should try reading those while sitting down.
Currently Watching on Netflix: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Rayguns! Jetpacks! Sky Pirate Angelina Jolie! I can’t say I’m too fond of Polly, but it’s an awesome little bit of fluff.
Currently Open in Other Tabs: Anomie, a Sherlock vid.
Also on the Sherlock angle: John and Sherlock Make a Baby (From Stuff they Find Around the Flat) Yes, it's technically kidfic. It's still good!
Night of the Living Trekkies: Three different people have linked me to this book trailer. Do you think they’re trying to tell me something?
The Newest Hyperbole and a Half: I know, I know, but this one literally had me wheezing with laughter!
The Complete Brioche Website: I’m trying to decide if I want my next large project (you know, after I finish the mittens, a pair of socks, maybe a beard balaclava and probably some Christmas presents) to be a 2-color brioche blanket or the brioche sweater. I know the sensible answer is ‘neither, are you crazy?’ . . . but it’s so tempting. . .
I can't believe it's taken me a week to get an episode reaction post up . . . work's been kicking my ass lately, working six days, 50-60 hour weeks.
And then I went and spent a sizable chunk of my overtime pay on comic books and ice cream, like a sensible adult.
So: Episode Reactions! Right! Spoilery bits separated by seed art, because what else am I going to do with pictures of seed art?
( Merlin (Spoilers for 3x01 and 3x02) )
( Ex Machina (Trade Paperback Vols. 4 and 5) )
( Mad Men (Spoilers for The Summer Man) )
. . . and now it's time for me to download the next episode.

. . . and I have things to say about Merlin and Mad Men that are probably of more interest to most of those reading, but they'll have to wait until tomorrow. Sorry! This is probably the last knitting post for a while-I doubt I'll finish the mittens in a week. Especially since it's day 2 and I'm still working out kinks in the pattern. . .

Sep. 11th, 2010 11:03 pmSince I feel a little awkward about only having a project I dislike on here, here's a bunch of other stuff I've knit (and had to post on ravelry anyway).

( Baby knits )
For those who don't care about knitting: have a minature pony butt. On me.
Minature pony butt offered because minature ponies are awesome, not because I think you're a horsebutt.
